About my art

Born and raised in Oakland, California, I now call Buffalo, New York home. My artistic inspiration comes while silently walking through spaces and places; allowing my mind to empty. Inspired, I take photos and videos of the moment, research my subject and use these references for my paintings. My art focuses on fleeting moments that stir emotion, or provide glimpses of beauty.

A favorite childhood story that continues to inspire my art tells of the experience of blind men meeting an elephant for the first time. Each man reached out to touch the elephant, but were only able to experience one part of the majestic beast. One touched its rough pebbly skin, one touched the stiff wiry hairs on its tail, another the smooth bony surface of a tusk. As they discussed their experiences of meeting the elephant, all the men were left wondering how they could have met the same animal, yet left with profoundly different views of what an elephant was. I approach my art in much the same way. Each man had a different experience, it is the collection of their experiences that builds the elephant.

I build my elephants in one of two ways. One way is using multiple medias to tell the same story with different subtleties. Allowing each media (acrylic, gouache, oil) to uniquely express a different aspect of the same subject, these duplicates allow the viewer to witness the elephant through multiple eyes. Another way I build my elephants is by painting a series of different images on the same subject. When an individual painting in this collection stands alone, it gives a snapshot of life. When they all stand together, their impact can be felt; enveloping you in the whole elephant.

Please walk with me through my paintings, pause when inspired and take that inspiration with you.
