About my art

A favorite childhood story that constantly inspires my art tells of the experience of blind men meeting an elephant for the first time. Each man reached out to touch the elephant, but were only able to experience one part of the majestic beast. One touched its rough pebbly skin, one touched the stiff wiry hairs of its tail, another the smooth bony surface of a tusk. As they discussed their experiences, each was left wondering how they could have met the same animal, and walked away with profoundly different experiences. I approach my art in much the same way. Each day we experience the world in a different way, collectively building our elephants.

I build my elephant by allowing myself to silently walk through spaces and places; allowing my mind to empty. I try to mindfully see the world with the same awe and wonder as though I am experiencing it for the first time. Inspired by the way light illuminates and cast shadows, allowing a new perspective to be revealed in texture and the peeling back of old layers found in every day places and found objects. My art focuses on these fleeting moments that stir emotion, or provide glimpses of forgotten beauty.

Please walk with me through my paintings, pause when inspired and take that inspiration with you.
